About Santa Monica Malibu PTA Council

Advocacy and Support for Excellent Public Education

by Maria Rodriguez, SMMPTA Council Past-President

For more than 80 years, the Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs has provided leadership, advocacy, communication and, funding to our school community. Our membership of more than 8,000 volunteers, is made up of parents, students, staff and community members who all work together tirelessly (over 115,000 volunteered hours per year) for one common cause and to provide ALL students with an excellent public education.

Research shows that parent involvement is one of the main predictors of student achievement. Our PTAs run volunteer programs for the classrooms, improve communication through newsletters and informational meetings and hold special school events that build community. Many of our enrichment programs and the much needed classroom supplies are funded by our PTAs.

The PTA, while nonpartisan, is also a politically active lobbying organization, supporting school funding measures as well as legislation to support public schools and the wellbeing of children and their families. As a recent National PTA poll indicates an overwhelming 93% of public school parents said that education plays a major role in their decision about which candidate to support in this election year.

Please be part of the future and join our local PTA.
