GREAT PARK: THE SANTA MONICA AIRPORT CONVERSION PROJECT SCENARIOS.

GREAT PARK: THE SANTA MONICA AIRPORT CONVERSION PROJECT SCENARIOS. LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!

SMMPTA is a sponsoring organization of the Great Park Coalition. We stand by the GPC mission of transforming the Santa Monica Airport site back into a Great Park in accordance with the 2014 Measure LC City Charter Amendment. We support maximizing a Great Park that will serve generations to come.

We are writing to ask that you please engage in the new CoMap survey and make your voice heard for children and families before June 22!  Engage here with the CoMap Tool:  http://www.smacproject.com

Santa Monica parent advocacy for an LC-compliant Great Park is more important than ever, as threats (from the well-funded aviation industry) to keep the airport open are appearing, and significant pressure is coming from those who would locate mass amounts of development on the space instead of much-needed recreational blue and green spaces for our park-poor city. To place development on airport land would require a ballot measure, and this would likely open the door for aviation to keep the airport operating.

SMMPTA endorsed Measure LC in 2014, after a comprehensive study of the issue, and a vote by the association including all our Presidents. SMMPTA endorsed Measure LC because our Council believes that an airport in a congested residential neighborhood is both dangerous and unhealthy, and because we believe in the benefits a Great Park would bring to our city: opportunities for immersion in nature, increased participation in sports and recreation, and enhanced cultural and arts experiences, for our children and families. In fall 2024, SMMPTA leadership voted to renew our commitment to Measure LC and to become a supporting organization of the Great Park Coalition. http://greatparkcoalition.org We hope you will check out the Great Park Coalition  website and learn more.

After over a year of community engagement thus far, the three scenarios requested by the City Council are here!  Go to the project website  http://www.smacproject.comfor the boards from the Community Event showing the three scenarios, under the ‘Learn & Engage’ tab, as well as the CoMap Survey tool in English and Spanish where you can provide feedback on the parts and pieces of each scenario that you support as well as find challenging. These scenarios are not the final scenarios; they are tools for conversation about what should be included in a new, hybrid, preferred scenario. The results of the Layers Survey many PTA families participated in can also be found at http://www.smacproject.com under the ‘Resources’ tab.

Upcoming Dates: CoMap Survey will close June 22nd. Project will be presented at City Council July 8th and will include the three scenarios and the community engagement results to date.
